Thoughts...

Nope. That will be too much of a pain. Ugly, eh? What is beautiful? Arcs chiseled out of marble and rubbed and nipped and polished and turned into glass? Wow! How delicate! How brittle! How lovely! Yes, one might stare enthralled, the lower jaw hanging loose, the tongue pink and slimy, drenched in excessively overflowing salivation- I know it feels natural that way. But I would rather have the saliva inside my mouth, thank you, around the bit of white gum playing inside, the flavor of mint painting my lips dull.

Jafran is also sweet. Expensive though. They charge it very high in the restaurants. Along with the rice, or mutton, or aloo, or other palatable delicacies. The scent of garlic remains for ages after the tummy has been vacated and new smells have filled the olfactory lobes afresh. Garlic never stinks!! Who said so? Then rose water stinks too. And onions. And vanilla essence. Or say, sandalwood.

Yet, sandalwood incense sticks are so nauseating! My head aches. But then, aches are a cliché too. Every poet talks it wild. Talks and talks and talks it until you drop dead. Death is a little weird thing to deal with. All the dying, crying, being sad, fasting, grief, tears, photographs, garlands, flashbacks, whiteness, grayness, sepia, clothes, bed sheets, diaries, rooms, discussions, silences, strange implications meant to be understood…

Do yawns give everyone a double chin?

Skin-deep beauty is quite costly. But a good chin is a god’s gift. I don’t know his name. But gods are always he and goddesses she. Or is it not so? I don’t care! We don’t have to learn the genders any more.

I told you that I did not want more. I forgot to tell you that I simply detested less. And it is always less. Not always, but often. Many times. At least sometimes.

Sometimes I stand by the window too long. And catch cold in the incoming gusts of rain-wind. It cools my reddened ears. The veins in my eyes relax. And I passionately dig my nose for little chunks of toxins filtered by the hair.

No way. I cannot be pretty. We are too poor for this. And moreover I cannot endure too much pain. Ugly beauty is less painful and more affordable. Can I have a bit of that, mister?

First Glimpse

On the down-slope after crossing the bridge, my rickshaw gathered its usual speed. Despite all the peak time Puja shopping, the road was relatively clear today. The rickshaw, thus, got the opportunity to accelerate its pace even more. I noticed the huge crowd at one of the openings of the bazaar and dismissed it as a simple triviality. That has been my habit for years. Years. All the LPG-less autos were also moving in full glory as everyday and stopping midway for passengers. And of course, the same sight of rickshaw-walas abusing them for taking the streets to be their baaper rasta. It is all so familiar, so predictable, so typical about this place that it has almost merged into my notion of a home. My home.

But then I saw it. Finally.
It sped along the bridge overhead… its colour light brown, almost a slithering serpent… the glassy windows shining along the orange light of a dying sun… soundless like sleep… yet, grand and overwhelming in its presence…

Before I could take it all in, my rickshaw simply crossed the over-bridge and the sight was left behind. By the time I had turned my head around, it had vanished inside the platform. Nothing of it was left but a piece of song that struck me along with the passion as I greeted the view.

(nagorik klanti te tomake chai,
ek fonta shanti te tomake chai,
bohudur hente ese tomake chai,
e jibon bhalobese tomake chai
...)

The essence of my city is inescapable. Glimpsing the newly extended metro railway along a dim-lit bridge for the first time is just one medium of feeling its pulse.

Long live, my love!

Yesterday... Tomorrow

They missed me yesterday.

They remembered that I could sing. They remembered that I could fill up gaps in conversations better than either of them. They remembered that I could make silence more comfortable.
Did they remember anything more?

The rains always provide with the option of staring out of the window. Of being thoughtful without a reason. Of fiddling with little nothings just like that. Of gathering up the courage to try out music at last.
So they sang. Songs of innocence. Songs of experience. They would not let it be. They would always make an effort to replicate. They would always want to feel easy. Pleasant. They would never admit of finding the gap. The gap that had once been something like a ringing laughter. Something like a silly to-be-photographed posture. Something like a felicity lunch. Something like a relieving existence.

No. Please don’t come for her tomorrow. I know… yes, I know. A facet of meanness if you please. But I would beg of you. Don’t come for her. The crowd may not become enough of a veil. And I can’t melt before them. Them all. And you. I cannot melt before you. So don’t come to see her off. Please! Yes, begging is all I got to do. All…

Peace.
Peace.
Peace.

They missed me yesterday.
But did they remember anything at all?

The June Night

The torrid June night has knocked again. The night that could never tell what it meant. That came tiptoed and kissed my forehead in sleep like a forbidden lover and went away, breathing an unreachable smile through its eyes. It refreshes me. Every time I die. It revives my spirit. It teaches me life.

What is it? A reminder, perhaps, to say that time has plucked one more of my parrot green years. Or to tell me that wisdom lies waiting to distil me of all juvenile ignorance. Or simply to bring the warning of an approaching end- to repeat that no beginning can come without a close.

Yet, this June night is an enigma, beyond any understanding and interpretation. It lulls me entranced. I wonder along the enmeshed alleys of a reverie that hangs as a part of some detached dreams. Or realities. Or reflections.

The lover chants along my breath…

“জন্মদিন আসে বারেবারে
মনে করাবারে
এ জীবন নিত্যই নূতন
প্রতি প্রাতে আলোকিত পুলকিত
দিনের মতন”

(Jonmodin ase barebare
Mone korabare
E jeebon nityoi nootan
Proti prate alokito pulokito
Diner moton.
)

The June night makes way for a bright morning.
I love light.
I love life.

A City Night

Up on the attic
Of skyscrapers and whispering sighs
Melting in crazy dreams
Dizzy with pretty lies
I fall, fall, fall…
Oh that bottomless trench
It moves forlorn by
Along the roadside stench.
Some dimming stars
A pitch-black night
Cars whooshing highway tracks
Psychedelic lights
My desk is dusky
Windows near,
Breezes breathing smoky dust
And faintly I can hear…

My city sings of lonely voids
It touches, oh it feels my eyes!
The evening rain has died so long
Now it’s time for more goodbyes.

Shaggy motels along murky lanes
Cheapness flooding women of doubtful birth
Trudging tramps with staling cigarette ends
Singing aloud the tunes of drudging earth.
Skinny dogs rolling in wetted sands
The puddles still mirror-clear,
All I need is a sleep ahead
But still a throb can hear…

My city sings of lonely voids
It touches, oh it feels my eyes!
The evening rain has died so long
Now it’s time for more goodbyes.

Cozy cafés, heated warm in neon beams
Secrets clogged with stories old
Spilling bins and vodka tins
Caffeine, pleasure, bought and sold.
Dreary bus stops staring blank
Lovers huddling empty parks
Darkened trees all swishing past
Painted walls and watermarks.
Bygone music, records known
Transistors fade with use and age
The stubborn baby still cries alone
The labor-man still counts his wage.
Oh my tongue is dry,
With laze and fear
But hark once more
And I can hear…

My city sings of lonely voids
It touches, oh it feels my eyes!
The evening rain has died so long
Now it’s time for more goodbyes.

Kalboishakhi...

The gray whirlpool of the dead dust has leapt to life again. At last. At long, long last. A strange afternoon, I’d say, of swishing trees and fluttering plastic bags. And yes, the dimming lights of a faded day. It held many stories, mostly unknown, and some, half-forgotten among the everyday sweat… among a lull that brings anything but sleep… among the lifeless groan of tedium and monotony… among dreams that only enhance disenchantment.

The rain did not matter. Or may be, it mattered less than the wind, or the dust that revolved round a spirit of aggression; very characteristic; very familiar; yet enigmatic in a way that inspires nothing less of an unfathomable awe. In short, nature at its paramount in an indiscriminate brutality.
Every kalboishakhi is special. Each brings a different darkness. A different aroma. A different tinge in the psyche. A different solitude. A different rapture. A different whisper. The ruthlessness breeds ache and alleviation with the same intensity- twin sisters rocking in the cradle of quivering fervor with the sudden strikes of lightning thunder.

I let in the dust. Through my window. Through my eyes. I let in the storm… the lightning… the rain. As my body felt their cruel touch, I allowed my mind to soar into heights that seemed unreachable before. That seems unreachable every year before this moment… this dark… this music… this unrest.

It’s a moment of rebellion. Strong. Wild. Mysterious. Passionate. Beautiful.
I’m too moved… too feeble to resist…
I’m giving in…

Journey

I confess. I saw eternity the other day. In the bustle. In the grey platform. In the bird-like animals along the high rising over bridge which must have been men and women in reality. My eyes were moist with silhouettes. I couldn’t see anything… only voices and noises flew along the heating air. I felt the dirty water licking the hemline of my long, flowing skirt…

The train was rushing in…
The world was spinning fast…
I gasped for breath…
My stomach gave a lurch…
A farewell smile blurred out of view…
The whistle could burst my ears…

I wanted to look away. But anyway, I couldn’t see anything… only sounds resonated inside my throat. I was dry and full. So I decided to keep still. Okay, I admit, I couldn’t have moved in any case. Roots, strong… adamant… rowdy, kept me fixed to the spot where I stood.

Did I stand at all?

And then the train came… Chugging and shrugging into a slothful halt.
Finally, I saw countless moves… the sea of unleashed colours which must have been men and women in reality.

The chocolate was melting inside the warmth of five clutching fingers…
My jaw was stiff with ache…
My cheek-muscles twitched…
And then…

Nothing happened. Only that I became deaf. Blank. Numb. It was an age before I discovered a change. A slight change. A beautiful change. A change that was not a change at all. It was all the same… the crowd… the fading sounds… the smudging colours… the ash jeans and black skirt… only that another five fingers clasped the melting chocolate over the previous five. It didn’t feel like a change, in fact. It was an end. A completion most obvious. A gift. An eternity.

One more shrill screech, and the train slowly left the station. I wanted to crane my neck for a last glance. But I was too full. Too heavy. Too captivated to move. The blue kurta and ash jeans still hung loose inside my skull… a smile that I tried to recollect couldn’t find a way out. My lips were parched and dead. Yet the train gathered speed… yet the crowd was scurrying about… yet the blue bench stared blatantly into my eyes… yet a waving hand disappeared among a thousand businesses...

Only I remained. Rooted. Quiet with inertia. Frozen with light. I wanted to close my eyes. I wanted to cry. I wanted to flee… to die…
But there I was! Standing amidst distorted images of reveries, realities and dreams. The whole of my consciousness was flooding with a glow… the beam was drenching my soul… liberating my pains… sweeping away all shadows of dilemma and doubts.

I knew at the instant, that I’ve undergone a journey... it was a religious cruise down my psyche. I felt it too deeply to deny.

I didn’t care whether my eyes were red… whether my hands were sticky with the remnants of melted cocoa... all I could manage is to utter “Happy Birthday”…
I needed it.
I was indeed born again.
